Understanding Robbery Prevention in Your Retail Setting

    Apr 09 2014

As a store owner, you love seeing your shop full of happy customers willing to spend plenty of money on what you're offering up for sale. However, this perfect scenario can come crashing down pretty quickly if you're the victim of theft or robbery. While it might not be something you want to think about, it doesn't change the fact that about 32,000 such incidents happen every year in Canada. Thankfully, with the help of a cash counting machine and some other strong tech, as well as a few quick tips related to robbery prevention, you can turn your shop from a likely target to a safe and secure storefront focused on keeping the profits rolling in.

    Handling Money Matters

How you handle your money can tell a potential crook a lot about whether your store is easy to knock over or not worth the trouble. Counting up registers carelessly or out in the open is just asking for trouble. Not only does this let criminals know how much money's on hand, but it also gives them another easy opportunity to pull off something illegal – not to mention that it's not exactly the best way to stay organized and on top of your finances.

A better idea is to use a protective system like a cash counting machine that sorts and stores all those loose bills. While it might take a little training to get your employees up to speed, you'll be able to promote safety in all new ways throughout the work day. Additionally, integrating other smart practices with your new system, like keeping cash on hand to a minimum and not opening your safe too often, add even more barriers between your hard earned money and the prying hands of an unsavory individual.

Build and Arrange Your Shop with Robbery Prevention in Mind

Once you've got a great system in mind, it's time to think on a bit of a bigger scale and potentially rearrange your shop's equipment and décor. While this might sound like painting the walls and adding crown molding, it's a little more practical in nature. Having cluttered windows, cramped spaces around the front desk and dim lighting are all major factors crooks are looking for when scouting out a potential target. If this sums up your shop, lightening things up and making it more open and visible should be a top priority.

Not All Theft Happens from the Outside

Robberies aren't just perpetrated by shadowy thieves looking to pull a quick one on your store. Unfortunately, plenty of employers have had to sift through the confusion of missing funds and suspect employees. While you might have an all-star crew manning your tills, that doesn't mean you should blindly trust everyone involved. Again, a protective system that helps you count and track everything that makes its way into your registers can give you a solid way to ensure that no cash conveniently gets "lost" or "misplaced." While it's not something you want to think about, simply turning a blind eye won't get you very far if you've got the wrong people on staff.
